Generally most orchids want bright filtered sun. In other words, a thin filmy curtain between the plant and the window, facing either south, east, or west. Usually north is not bright enough unless there is a lot of reflected light or some morning sun.
You want to water the plant thoroughly when the top 1" of the mix is getting dry. This can be 2x per week on small pots that are 2-4" across or once a week on 6" or larger pots. Do not let the plant sit in water. It can be in a tray with water and pebbles that keep the pot above the water level. |

Early morning direct sun is OK, but not in the middle of the day or the leaves can burn. Kitchens and bathrooms are often good locations if the light is adequate as there is easy access to water. If the leaves feel hot then there is probably too much direct light and it is necessary to move the plants back a little from the window. |

Misting the plants is OK when the air is dry or during warm weather but do not mist at night when it is cool as it can create fungal problems. In any case misting should not be a substitute for thorough watering so that the mix is watered thoroughly. |
My recomendation for fertilizing is 2 x per month with a balanced fertilizer (20/20/20) half strength although many people fertilize every week (only quarter strength.).
Any brand fertilizer is fine so long as it is balanced. It doesn't have to be specifically for orchids.Orchids can be fertilized when they are in bloom as long as you don't use full strength. |
